A group of concerned staff members at the University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University, have petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent removal of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor.

The petition, signed by 10 professors—including deans of various faculties—was addressed to President Tinubu, challenging the decision, which also included the dissolution of the university's Governing Council on February 6. Prof. Maikudi was replaced by Professor Patricia Manko Lar, who will serve as acting Vice-Chancellor for six months.

The petitioners described the removal as "sudden and unexplained," arguing that it violated the Universities Miscellaneous Act of 1993, which outlines clear procedures for dismissing a Vice-Chancellor. They maintained that no evidence of gross misconduct or inability to perform was presented before the decision was made.

Criticizing the lack of due process, the petitioners accused the government of undermining the university’s autonomy. "There was no formal communication of any misconduct or issue with Professor Maikudi's leadership. Her removal, without following proper channels, raises serious concerns about the integrity of our academic institutions," the petition stated.

They further noted that Prof. Maikudi enjoyed significant support among faculty and students due to her leadership style and swift reforms. "Her decisions have been widely accepted, and she has been a catalyst for much-needed change," a senior faculty member remarked.

The petition also referenced an ongoing court case filed by internal candidates who contested Maikudi’s initial appointment. However, the staff argued that such disputes should not overshadow the legitimacy of the selection process or her performance in office.

Calling on President Tinubu to reverse the decision and ensure adherence to legal procedures in future governance decisions, the petitioners aligned their stance with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has recently condemned government interference in university affairs.

"We believe in your commitment to justice and good governance, and we trust you will act in the best interest of Nigerian universities," the petition concluded.
